Sustainable Cosmetics Summit : l'édition 2021

This year, the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit will discuss the evolution of sustainability issues in the cosmetics industry. What environmental and social issues are taking priority during the pandemic? How can the industry move towards circular beauty? How should cosmetic formulations & packaging adapt for a greener future? Such questions will be addressed in this European edition, hosted online on 25-28th October 2021.

Michael Brenner, Executive Board Member of Weleda, will give the opening keynote.
He will share the company’s green journey and give his perspective on future developments. Weleda is the oldest natural cosmetics brand in the world, celebrating its centenary this year. The Swiss-based company is a frontrunner: a founding member of Natrue industry organisation, it is investing in ethical sourcing and impact mitigation projects, as well as championing social causes.

Ingredients
Green materials is a major focus. A wide range of green ingredients are becoming available for cosmetic formulations. Originally, the shift was from synthetic chemicals to plant-based (natural) ingredients. Now, the broad assortment of green ingredients include those made from sustainable feedstock like algae, biomass, and other bio-based sources. Many cosmetic and ingredient firms are also investing in upcycled ingredients. Clariant, Akott, CLR Berlin, and Firmenich will be speaking about such green materials.
Kristin Neumann from MyMicrobiome will give an update on microbiome-friendly ingredients, whilst Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn from ForestWise will highlight the need for deforestation-free ingredients.
The growing demand for plant-based ingredients for vegan cosmetics will also be covered.

Packaging
Cosmetic brands will also learn about approaches to reduce their packaging impacts.
