The eco-challenges of logistics applied to cosmetics

Les écodéfis de la logistique appliqués à la cosmétique

When we talk about the current movement towards eco-responsibility and sustainable development, we often think of reduced packaging, purified formulas, ethical sourcing of raw materials… We almost as often forget to take into account the supply chain and especially transportation, and yet, their share is not small in the environmental impacts of a company! This is the message that Bruno Guillard, Corporate Business Development Manager at Dachser, brought to Cosmetic Days, organized by Cosmed on June 10 and 11, 2021. And he added a few tips to work on this aspect in an efficient way.

To set the scene for his speech, Bruno Guillard cited a few figures:
• 40% less carbon emissions by 2030: this is the objective set by the French government as part of the France Relance plan
• 76% of executives intend to direct their investments towards the ecological transition
• 83% of consumers want products to be designed and manufactured in a way that does not harm the environment and are asking for proof
“The ecological transition is well underway,” commented Bruno Guillard, “and we must integrate what is often considered the fifth wheel, the supply chain, which can be a lever in the process of transforming companies from the current economic model to a more sustainable model.”

The supply chain represents all the flows of a company, from the supply of raw materials to the delivery of its customers.
It includes :
• All supplies (raw materials, packaging, packaging) which can come from anywhere in the world
• Warehousing, labeling, assembly, sampling…
• Distribution services, which can be provided by truck, train, ship or plane, depending on the destination of the goods
• Services carried out during delivery (recovery of empty pallets in the stores, cardboard boxes, plastic films …
