Natural cosmetics: state of affairs and prospects

At its general meeting of 17 June 2014 in Paris, the Cosmébio association held several conferences to shed light on the context that surrounds natural cosmetics. Ewa Grigar, a Research and Marketing Manager at Kline & Company, a market research group, went over the state of affairs for the industry’s global market and provided advice on how best to position oneself.

The state of affairs presented by Ms. Grigar was taken from Natural Personal Care: Global Market Brief , an overview study of the global market for natural personal care products conducted by Kline, with a focus on key trends, market developments, challenges, business opportunities, and natural product certification.

Five major trends are apparent for the year 2013.
• The world market for personal care products is worth $30 billion and it is experiencing double-digit growth.
• The Brazilian market is growing the fastest.
• Skincare products remain the best-selling category.
• The US and European markets for natural products have reached maturity. GMO-free personal care products are growing.
• Forecasts for the Asian market indicate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13%.

Ms. Grigar pointed out that in this study, the term ‘natural products’ refers to all brands positioned in the market for natural personal care products, and this market is divided into two subcategories: certified natural products and products ‘inspired by nature’ that are presented as being natural. This includes fragrances, haircare products, make-up, oral hygiene products, skincare products, and bodily hygiene products.
