Smart perfumes and cosmetics

Dr Patrice Bellon, President of the SFC (French Society of Cosmetology) and Director of Cosmetoscent, came to the U’Cosmetics symposium dedicated to the ‘Cosmetic Experience’ last March 17, 2016 to share his expertise in perfumes and unveil their properties in terms of soul, body… and skin care!

Patrice Bellon recently founded his own company, Cosmetoscent , dedicated to innovation and R&D consulting. But it is actually his previous work done at Symrise (cosmetics ingredient supplier, in particular for fragrances and aromas) that he chose to present at the symposium. ‘Perfume is one of the main components of a cosmetic product’, he declared straight away . ‘And it has real powers. One can say perfume is smart, because other than a simple smell, it provides cosmetic benefits through the olfactory receptors on the skin’.

As an expert in aromachology and neurosciences, Patrice Bellon highlighted this little-known aspect: when it perceives a smell, the brain reacts and creates a certain state, both of wellness and on the skin. A number of scientific publications have actually proven a smell could act on biocellular mechanisms: a study conducted by the Shiseido laboratories and in the awakening room of Yokohama’s hospital in Japan has shown that diffusing the smell of lemon made it easier for patients having undergone surgery to recover from it.
From a more commercial perspective, both high-profile hotels and certain store chains have been using this property by diffusing their ‘olfactory logo’ to create an easily identifiable atmosphere inside …
