Sustainable packaging on the agenda at the next Berlin Conference on Natural Cosmetics

Le packaging durable au programme de la prochaine Conférence sur les cosmétiques naturels de Berlin

The sustainability of packaging is a topic that is increasingly shifting into the focus. Zero waste, conservation of resources, recycling or recycled materials are the current buzzwords. For the beauty industry and natural and organic cosmetics, the topic of sustainable packaging also provides some challenges. This will be one of the themes of the Natural and Organic Cosmetics Conference to be held on 24 and 25 September 2019 in Berlin.

During the 12th edition of the Natural & Organic Cosmetics Conference held September 24 & 25, 2019 in Berlin, this sustainability topic will be the focal point of both a presentation and a discussion. Ultimately, product packaging must meet several requirements: it needs to look great, should arouse the customer´s curiosity and protect the product at the same time. And consumers are increasingly expecting eco-friendly packaging solutions.

“Eco-Design is a multi-faceted, complex issue and the requirements for product manufacturers are high,” confirms Wolf Lüdge, program chairman and manager of the naturkosmetik verlag, which in cooperation with the Vivaness hosts the Natural & Organic Cosmetics Conference. “In addition, there is the necessary compliance with the new German national packaging regulations. These regulatory measures promote the usage of packaging material that at least in part is made from recycled materials, or materials where a large percentage can be recycled. During the conference we want to demonstrate how sustainable packaging solutions can be implemented.”

In her presentation on the second conference day, Packaging Material & Technology Specialist Dipl.-Ing. Carolina Schweig, owner of the Packaging Consulting Company C.E. Schweig, will center on how Eco-Design can be developed and circular economy be supported. How can so-called Closed Loops be realized and just what exactly does “biodegradable” really mean?

“The one and only perfect, sustainable packaging doesn´t exist,”” explains Carolina Schweig. “There are certain determining factors provided by the packaging regulations and provisions by the European Union. Strategically implemented, these factors are environmentally friendly and enhance the company´s image, but they also work towards ensuring the company´s healthy economic efficiency.”

And sustainable packaging solutions do offer a large potential for the market positioning of organic cosmetic companies: “in particular when the development of these concepts is based on a clear, coherent sustainability strategy. Then sustainable packaging is no longer the necessity imposed by regulations but the factor for success,” states Carolina Schweig.
So are Eco-Design and closed loops not so much a must for the industry but a voluntary choice? Following the presentation, the expert´s discussion “Circular economy for packaging in global demand – but how?” will provide further insights into the topic.

“Authentic and innovative into the future” is the motto of the Natural & Organic Cosmetics Conference held September 24 & 25, 2019. More than 250 executives from the entire cosmetics industry will focus on essential topics in presentations and discussion groups.
