HC Orange No.6: Opinion of the SCCS

The SCCS has just published its Opinion on the new cosmetic hair dye ingredient HC Orange No. 6, adopted by written procedure on 7 November 2016 following its safety assessment. This Opinion is open for comments until January 10, 2017.

Background

Submission I on the hair dye HC Orange No. 6 (B125), with the chemical name Di-[2-[(E)-2-[4-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminophenyl]vinyl]pyridin-1-ium]-ethyl]disulfide dimethanesulfonate (CAS 1449653-83-1), was transmitted by Cosmetics Europe in December 2015.
The new ingredient HC Orange No. 6 (B125) is intended to be used in non-oxidative hair colouring products at a maximum concentration of 0.5%.

The SCCS has concerns regarding a potential presence of methanesulfonates impurities, in particular ethyl methanesulfonate. Information on these impurities has not been provided.
