On 4 December 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published Denmark’s proposal for harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) for Geraniol, a perfuming agent included in the list of labelled allergens.
Geraniol (CAS No.106-24-1; EC No.203-377-1; INCI: Geraniol) is a ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the functions: Tonic, Perfuming.
The substance is listed in Annex III/78 of European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, which states that its présence substance must be indicated in the list of ingredients on cosmetic packaging when its concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
It is not currently listed in Annex VI of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008.
Denmark intends to propose a CLH classification for Geraniol for its reproductive toxicity.
If the process is completed, Geraniol could be classified as a reprotoxic and therefore a CMR, and its use could be banned in cosmetic products in Europe, unless the ban is waived following an opinion from the SCCS.
