On 21 March 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) reported on the latest meeting of its Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). On the agenda were topics of interest to the cosmetics industry: progress on the proposal to restrict PFAS, an opinion on the classification and harmonised labelling of Potassium Bromide, and two opinions on the revision of the classification of lithium salts and Methyl Methacrylate.

PFAS

ECHA has announced the timetable for the assessment of the PFAS restriction proposal by its two expert committees, the RAC and the SEAC (Socio-Economic Analysis Committee). Following the large number of comments received during the consultation, the work has been divided according to the different sectors affected, and divided between the various committee meetings. On the agenda:
• In March 2024:
-> Consumer mixtures, cosmetics and ski wax
-> Hazards of PFAS (only by RAC)
-> General approach (only by SEAC)
• In June 2024:
-> Metal plating and manufacture of metal products
-> Additional discussion on hazards (only by RAC)
• In September 2024:
-> Textiles, upholstery, leather, apparel, carpets
-> Food contact materials and packaging
-> Petroleum and mining
In tandem, the five national authorities who prepared the proposal, are updating their initial report to address the consultation comments. This updated report will be assessed by the committees and will serve as the foundation for their opinions.

Potassium Bromide

The RAC opBnion covers Sodium Bromide (CAS: 7647-15-6, EC: 231-599-9), Potassium bromide (CAS: 7758-02-3, EC: 231-830-3) and Calcium Bromide (CAS: 7789-41-5, EC: 232-164-6), but only Potassium Bromide is listed in the CosIng with the function: Viscosity controllling.
