1.3% annual growth for French packaging by 2026

According to GlobalData, a company specialising in market data and analysis, the French packaging market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.3%, from 94.6 billion units in 2021 to 101.1 billion units in 2026. This growth is expected to be driven mainly by rigid plastics, including in the cosmetics sector.

According to a recent GlobalData report, rigid plastic was the preferred packaging material in France in 2021, with a 41.1% share. It was followed by flexible packaging and glass with shares of 26.4% and 12.9% respectively.

GlobalData analyst Nath Srimoyee comments: “As consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental risks caused by packaging waste, they are looking for solutions that are both sustainable and practical, forcing FMCG companies to change their packaging accordingly.”

The low cost and light weight of rigid plastics should contribute to their significant growth. Their use will also be aided by their easy and convenient storage.
Meanwhile, rigid metal is expected to register the fastest CAGR of 2.7% over the period 2021-26. Growing awareness about plastic waste and its adverse effects on the environment is likely to increase its usage over the forecast period.

Nath Srimoyee says, “Over the forecast period, rigid metal and glass will be the winning packaging materials in terms of growth, with significant use in the soft drinks and alcoholic beverage industries. Their recycling properties and superior quality will attract consumers looking for sustainable and premium packaging solutions.”
