A standard for beauty treatments

Lovingly named XP X50-831-1, this French standard for ‘Beauty and wellness treatments’ clarifies these activities and establishes criteria for quality, skill level, hygiene, and safety. Applied voluntarily, it has been long awaited by beauty and wellness professionals.

A continuously expanding service that is a consumer favourite, the beauty and wellness sector has grown by 15.8% in the last ten years. Women are not alone in their passion for the sector, with men representing up to 10% of clientele in some beauty institutes. This economic activity is extremely dynamic, with 36,903 businesses generating €2,538 billion in turnover and employing 23,471 people, approximately 10,000 of whom are self-employed. Tanning accounts for the activity of 600 tanning salons and 3,000 employees, with €120 million in turnover. The nails and lashes sector is made up of 9,000 businesses employing 15,000 people, with €245 million in turnover.

Standard XP X50-831-1

Developed under the aegis of AFNOR, France’s national organisation for standardisation, standard XP X50-831-1 establishes the guidelines for defining which procedures can be performed by an aesthetician and in which professional premises the treatments may be administered. Also defined are accommodation requirements and requirements for the quality of service of beauty and wellness treatments provided to individuals with no medical or therapeutic aim, as well as the required diplomas and qualifications, skill levels, and knowledge needed to administer these treatments.
