U?Cos: a gust of wind in the eco-design to rejuvenate the cosmetic industry

A fresh breeze was blowing over Guingamp, on 21 March 2013. In fact, we are not talking of the Brittany climate and its renowned penetrating drizzle, but, indeed, of the impression that the 4th U’Cos contest provided the audience with. On the stage, the dress-code was in the stress-mode, with black skirts or dresses and high-heeled shoes de rigueur for ladies, memory lapses when showcasing the projects considered for the awards, and a lot of emotions. At stake, the prize of the best cosmetic concept after the eco-design theme.

Rather difficult to define the eco-design concept: a convention day along with the U’Cosmetics contest was almost not enough … (go to the article on this topic: Eco-design and cosmetics: the environment-friendly water drop? ).
To sum it up with few words, Fabien Bouton, a designer in eco-design in the Evea Conseil agency, says, it is "the integration of the environmental requirements at the earliest possible stage, to lower the impact of a product on the environment, at each step of its life cycle, when compared to a similar product."

Thus, with this prerequisite in mind, the students in cosmetics training from France over, had to imagine, design, manufacture and present innovative products, either in terms of their formulations or in terms of their marketing concept.
Seven projects have been presented to a jury comprising "highly-cosmetic" people, such as Jean-Claude Le Joliff (Inn2C), Lionel de Benetti, Sandrine Morvan (DCLI-C – Cosmed Grand Ouest), Anne-Sophie Savalle (Yves Rocher) or Émilie Simon (Algotherm) …

The audience has not been disappointed when the different projects were presented. In fact, we saw there more ideas, more boldness and enthusiasm than in many of the “cosmetic novelties” that the sector puts forward every day.
