Every morning, we think of cleansing our face to make it cleaner and fresher, we apply a cream to keep our skin healthy, we put on makeup to even our complexion and make our eyes shine… But we often forget about this one tiny detail: cleaning the accessories we use. And yet, they, too, deserve our full attention!
If we do not take care of the brushes and sponges we use every day as part of our beauty routine, germs and bacteria are likely to develop and contaminate our skin. For example, did you know that dirty brushes may trigger acne, block pores, and deposit impurities on the skin? Still, 45% of women declare they never clean their brushes…
So, here are a few tips to keep using your beauty products safely.
Makeup brushes accumulate thousands of germs that may make your skin dirty and infect it. That is why it is so important to keep them as clean as possible. In addition, you will not end up with a mixture of shades on the same brush. Ideally, you should clean them after use. If you do not have enough time, do not forget to clean them at least every other week.
Makeup brushes should not be cleaned the same way depending on their characteristics:
Brushes made of natural hair: mainly for powders
Clean them with soapy water and let them dry. Be careful not to place them in a vertical position when they are still wet, as their wooden wand might get damaged. You can also apply a conditioner on your brushes once a month, so that they remain supple and soft.
Brushes made of synthetic hair: mainly for unctuous products
Clean them with a non-alcoholic product. For example, there are many leave-on cleansing solutions that can be directly applied on your brush with a clean cloth.
2. Makeup sponges
Single-use sponges are the most hygienic. However, if you would rather use reusable sponges, do not forget to disinfect them with a bit of washing-up liquid and a drop of disinfecting alcohol. You can also clean them with baby lotion or micellar water. Leave the sponge to dry before putting it away or using it again.
3. Brushes for lipsticks and foundation
For those of you that apply lipstick with a brush, it is important to keep it clean. To disinfect it, use a damp cloth soaked with alcohol to give it a boost of radiance. No need to clean it too often: once a month should do.
4. Makeup bags
They contain all your most precious treasures, but they are often neglected when it comes to cleaning, while in fact, germs and bacteria contaminate your accessories every day. To solve this problem, clean yours completely on a regular basis (every 2 to 3 months) or just put it in the washing machine. In the meantime, refresh it with a face wipe.
5. A trick to remove makeup traces from your clothes
Just spotted a makeup stain on your clothes? No panic! Soak them in a mixture of water, vinegar, and a bit of lemon juice. Wait for a few minutes, and then apply a bit of detergent directly on the stain. Rub the area concerned until the stain has disappeared, then rinse thoroughly.
As for lipstick traces, it is better to soak a piece of cotton in ammonia and rub the stain before soaking the clothes in hot water.
