L'Oréal research in space

On August 22, 2019, the International Space Station (ISS) welcomed on board Mini-EUSO, a new generation telescope designed to study Earth and space, developed by the Riken research team (the Japanese Institute for Physical and Chemical Research) in collaboration with L'Oréal Research & Innovation.
The observation of space and skin requires the development of ever more sophisticated imaging devices, and this has motivated the coloration between the two teams.
For space researchers from 16 countries gathered around the EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) project, the aim was to identify rare phenomena of terrestrial or space origin in order to establish a dynamic map of the various events occurring in the atmosphere of our planet.
The objective for L'Oréal researchers was to develop an imaging device that could be used in vivo to better define and understand the different characteristics of facial skin: colour, pigmentary anomalies, skin lesions.
The work common to both teams ranged from the development of imaging systems and detectors to data processing and the development of algorithms dedicated to the extraction and identification of skin characteristics.
Two devices, one for the skin and the other for space, were designed in parallel.
