The French ANSM bans chloracetamide

The press release is sent on 25 June 2012. After a decision on June 14, the ANSM (French National Agency for Safety of Medicines) decides the recall and bans manufacturing, import, export, wholesale, holding for selling or free gifts, and using cosmetic products that contain chloroacetamide. This decision will not change the life, as this preservative is almost no longer used in formulae nowadays …

Due to the classification of chloroacetamide as a Category 2, H321f, toxic for reproduction substance, i.e. able to impair fertility, considering an opinion by the SCCS, the ANSM has concluded that the safety margin for this substance was not high enough; thus, this substance cannot be considered as safe to consumers.

Considering that this substance may a be a serious danger to the human health, the ANSM has taken this decision, on a temporary basis, waiting for potential measures at the European level.
