SCCS is the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety.
This scientific committee is composed of 17 members (chemistry and toxicology experts, for the most part) and issues opinions on the health and safety risks (chemical, biological, mechanical and other physical risks) of consumer goods other than food (for instance, cosmetic products and their ingredients, toys, textile, clothes, body hygiene products and household products), as well as services to consumers (such as tattoos, artificial tanning, etc.).
Reports from the committee are usually published as an answer to a specific request, which most often comes from the European Commission, but these scientists can also release declarations on particular topics on their own initiative.
The committee adopts opinions following the risk assessment process, and these opinions become the basis of the next European regulations.
