Alternative methods: Real progress, though still a long road ahead

Colipa, The European Cosmetics Association, held in Brussels a debriefing on the 8th World Congress on alternative methods to animal testing. Clearly, though significant advances have been made, we are still a long way from the goal. CosmeticOBS-L’Observatoire des Cosmétiques attended this meeting.

In the European Parliament Building, in Brussels, Colipa, together with MEP Dagmar Roth-Behrendt, welcome a hundred guests (European MPs, civil servants from the European Commission, delegates of the cosmetic industry and animal welfare NGOs) on 18 October 2011. On the agenda: the results of the "WC8", the  8th "World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences" , held in Montreal, from 21 to 25 August 2011.

This multi-sector Congress attracted more than 800 scientists, with the central theme: "The three Rs - together, it’s possible" - the 3 Rs being: "Replacement, Reduction, Refinement", developed by William Russel and Rex Burch in 1959 in their book, "The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique", the reference in alternative methods.  Logically, Colipa was present in the WC8 programme, with 16 presentations (oral or as posters), about five main topics: eye irritation, genotoxicity, skin sensitisation, safety assessment and systemic toxicity.
