Ingredients: consumers and their thirst for knowledge

Although INCI lists are difficult to understand, the general public is looking for a better understanding of the composition of the beauty products they use. Moreover, they are looking for specific active ingredients to solve certain skin problems. On the occasion of in-cosmetics Barcelona 2023, Vivienne Rudd, Beauty & Personal Care Director at Mintel, explained the needs of consumers in terms of formulation and benefits on the skin.

“We observe a thirst for information on the part of citizens,” introduces the expert. “They want to know what raw materials are used in products and better understand their role. On Reddit, the #Skincareaddiction thread has 1.7 million members who share recommendations on the ingredients used by brands.”

A real interest

According to the figures presented by Vivienne Rudd, 47% of Britons explain that the description of active ingredients is one of the information to be highlighted on the packaging.
And consumers take pleasure in learning about the role of raw materials. 73% of Chinese women find it entertaining.
Finally, scrupulously studying the INCI list is a habit for many people before making a purchase. 43% of American beauty addicts do research beforehand.

Is this interest in the composition of cosmetics a passing trend? It seems not. On the contrary, it is a phenomenon that is gaining popularity over time.
36% of Americans and 50% of Brazilians say they pay more attention to skincare formulas now than they did a year ago.
