Do the French buy in a sustainable way?

In the face of environmental urgency, are consumers changing their habits and turning to more sustainable alternatives? To answer this question, Retail Tech and OpinionWay surveyed a sample of 1,009 French people.

The OpinionWay survey for Retail Tech was carried out between September 20 and 21, 2023.

Often, more “responsible” products are more expensive. 40% of French people are willing to buy more expensive cosmetics as long as they respect nature. Men are less inclined than women to make this effort (39% versus 42%).
Among the 18-24% age group, 53% agree to pay more for “responsible” skincare, compared with 37% of 25-34 year-olds, 35% of 35-49 year-olds and 34% of 50-64 year-olds. Surprisingly, 43% of those aged 65 and over are willing to spend more on a more sustainable beauty product.

Those surveyed (based on 406 respondents to this question) are prepared to accept a price increase of 9.6% for a more nature-friendly cosmetic (versus 12% for a foodstuff).

Everyday actions

The French are making efforts to combat climate change.
They:
• No longer use single-use bags to carry their products (64%)
• Buy food products that are close to their use-by date, to reduce waste (57%)
• Consume less (53%)
• Reduce plastic use by avoiding over-packaged products (51%)
• Give preference to “Made in France” products (51%)
• Look at the origin of all products (50%)
• Accept slower delivery …
