The French and their commitment to the environment

Preserving the environment is a battle that concerns every individual. And while the smallest daily gesture is important, not all consumers are equally sensitive to the environmental emergency. To gain a better understanding of French people’s commitment to the environment, Ma Petite Planète commissioned the OpinionWay polling institute.

The survey was carried out between July 8 and 13, 2023. 1033 French people (representative of the French population) were questioned.

Generally speaking, respondents indicated that they had changed some of their habits in order to have a positive impact on the planet.
They explained:
• Paying attention to their energy consumption (95%)
• Limiting waste as much as possible (95%)
• Eating responsibly (79%)
• Reducing their carbon footprint (73%)
• Buying from sustainable brands (62%)
• Using non-polluting means of transport (60%)
• Spreading the word (44%)
• Supporting those involved in sustainability (28%)

OpinionWay sifted through the respondents’ profiles.
It appears that activism is more pronounced among the under-50s.
83% of the under-50s say they want to do more for the environment. This desire to act is also true of parents with children under 18 (84%).

Brakes

Acting responsibly is not a given for the entire population. Certain barriers remain, such as:
• The lack of confidence in the arguments in favor of sustainable consumption (57%)
• Having more pressing issues to deal with (56%)
• The lack of financial means (48%)
• The inability to understand the real impact of actions taken (43%)
