Registration of the European citizens’ initiative "European EcoScore"

On 30 June 2021, the European Commission decided to register the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) entitled “European EcoScore”, a mandatory label providing consumers with information about the environmental impact of products manufactured or sold on the EU market. This decision was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 12 July 2021. The organisers can now start the process of collecting signatures.

The organisers of the “European EcoScore” initiative call on the Commission to propose “a reliable European EcoScore”. The label would be based on a standardised calculation, starting with food and clothing but ultimately aiming to cover all types of products.

The objectives of the initiative

The objectives of the initiative are expressed as follows:
“We are a citizens’ movement driven by young people from all over Europe who want to take concrete action for our environment. In view of the ambitions of the Green Deal for Europe and the Paris Agreement, we call on the European Commission to impose a reliable ‘European EcoScore’. It consists of a label providing European consumers with transparent information about the environmental impact of products manufactured or sold on the European Union market. This compulsory and clearly visible indication on the packaging would provide simple and reliable information on the environmental impact of the product according to the letter selected (‘A’ = very environmentally friendly, while ‘F’ = very harmful to the environment).”
