Already under scrutiny after several surveys targeted its safety, Triclocarban, a preservative used in washing gels and deodorants, is once more warned against.

A preliminary study published March 7 in the US
Environmental Science andTechnology
has shown a causal link between repeated use of personal care products containing
Triclocarban
as
antibacterial
preservative
and inhibition of biological functions of the body.
The scientists measured human urine concentrations 0−72 h after showering with a commercial bar soap containing 0.6 % of
Triclocarban
and found evidence that the absorption of the chemical increased along the frequency of exposure. Confirming the biological consequences of this continuous exposure, an in vitro inhibition of enzyme activity due this
preservative
was detected.
As a conclusion, the study calls for further investigation the effects of long-term exposure to
Triclocarban
, as the chemical has been shown to inhibit enzyme function
in vitro.
