On 3 July 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published Spain’s intention to harmonise the classification and labelling (CLH) of Acetophenone, a fragrance ingredient, as a category 1B reprotoxic substance. A threat to its use in cosmetics if the process goes ahead.
Acetophenone (No.CAS: 98-86-2; No.EC: 202-708-7) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the function: Fragrance.
It is not currently regulated by Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009.
It is listed in Annex VI/606-042-00-1 of CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications:Nocif en cas d’ingestion Harmful if swallowed.
• Eye Irrit. 2, H319 - Causes serious eye irritation.
Spain proposes adding the following classification:
• Repr. 1B, H360FD - May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child.
If the process comes to an end and this classification becomes effective, Acetophenone would therefore be listed as a CMR, the use of which, unless exempted, is prohibited in cosmetic products in Europe.
