Canada announces the end of animal testing for cosmetics

The Canadian government has just announced a ban on the testing of beauty products on animals. Local companies will no longer be allowed to sell products whose safety assessment is based on animal testing data.

Following in the footsteps of the European Union, Australia, the United Kingdom and South Korea, Canada joins the list of countries that no longer allow cosmetic testing on animals.
Bill C-47, Budget Implementation Act No. 1, 2023, has been amended to this effect.

“Animal protection, now and in the future, is something that many Canadians have called for and that we can all celebrate. We are proud to move forward with this measure and assure Canadians that the products they buy are cruelty-free. We will continue to work with experts and international partners to find safe and humane alternatives, so that no more animals suffer and die as a result of cosmetics testing,” said the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Canada’s Minister of Health.

For his part, Darren Praznik, President and CEO of the Cosmetic Industry Alliance of Canada, declared: “Over the past few years, industry and animal advocates have worked together to ban animal testing of cosmetics in Canada. Since this issue was first raised in Parliament through a private member’s bill in the Senate in 2015, our group has met several times to build a collaborative relationship and align on principle with Health Canada while ensuring that the ban is …
