On 17 May 2024, Health Canada announced the latest update to the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, which lists ingredients that are banned or restricted in the country. There are a total of four new entries and five revised entries.

Basic green 4
• No.CAS: 569-64-2 / 18015-76-4; No.EC: 209-322-8 / 241-922-5; INCI: Malachite
• In Canada, this ingrédient was added to the list of prohibited substances due to potential developmental effects.
• In Europe, this colorant is also prohibited (Annex II/188 of Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009).
Benzophenone
• No.CAS: 119-61-9; No.EC: 204-337-6; INCI: Benzophenone
• In Canada, ingredient was added to the list of restricted substances due to adverse maternal effects such as decreased body weight.
Its maximum authorised concentration is now 3%.
• In Europe, the substance os prohibited (Annex II/1703 of Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009).
p-Chloro-m-Cresol
• No.CAS: 59-50-7; No.EC: 200-431-6; INCI: p-Chloro-m-Cresol
• In Canada, this ingredient was added to the list of restricted substances due to health concerns regarding the adrenal organs.
It is now prohibited in cosmetics intended to be used on or around mucosal membranes such as eyes, nose or mouth, and limited to 0.1% in other cosmetics.
The product must also be labelled with the warning: “Do not use in the area of the eye, mouth or nose.”
