On 2 October 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a consultation on Spain’s proposal for the harmonised classification and labelling of Acetophenone, a fragrance ingredient, as “Toxic for reproduction” category 1 B. The consultation is open until 1 December 2023.
Acetophenone (No.CAS: 98-86-2; No.EC: 202-708-7; INCI: Acetophenone) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the function: Fragrance.
It is not currently regulated by Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009.
It is listed in Annex VI/606-042-00-1 of CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications: Harmful if swallowed.
• Eye Irrit. 2, H319 - Causes serious eye irritation.

Spain proposes to classify the substance as follows.

If this classification becomes effective, thise ingredient would be listed as a CMR, the use of which, unless exempted, is prohibited in cosmetic products in Europe.
