On 19 June 2023, the European Commission notified a proposal to amend the REACH Regulation. The proposed measure aims to ban the use of undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), its salts and related substances (a sub-group of PFASs), including in cosmetic products. The text is due to be adopted by the end of 2023.
Key points of the draft Regulation
• To limit the release of PFHxA and prevent its accumulation in the environment, the Commission plans to ban it in several types of products, including cosmetics.
• The ban will apply as soon as the substances concerned are present in a concentration equal to or greater than 25 ppb for the sum of PFHxA and its salts, or 1,000 ppb for the sum of PFHxA-related substances.
• The ban will apply for 24 months from the date of entry into force of the Regulation.
• This text should be adopted by the end of 2023.
