Enquête publique sur l’indication géographique "Absolue Pays de Grasse"

Following the request for approval of the association Les Fleurs d’Exception du Pays de Grasse, the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) has opened a public inquiry on the geographical indication “Absolue Pays de Grasse”. The application for a geographical indication concerns seven companies located in the Alpes Maritimes (France). The public inquiry is open to all.

A geographical indication distinguishes a product originating in a given geographical area which possesses qualities, reputation or characteristics linked to that place of origin. It shall protect the name of the said product from counterfeiting and other copying. Its characteristics are specified in a specification examined by the INPI. Approval is granted following an investigation and a public inquiry conducted by the INPI.

The association Les Fleurs d’Exception du Pays de Grasse filed a request for approval of the specifications for the geographical indication (GI) “Absolue Pays de Grasse” with the INPI on 24 March 2020.
The initial operators of this GI are companies that process perfume plants from the Pays de Grasse and that are located in the geographical area concerned: these are the companies Firmenich, Jean Gazignaire SAS, IFF-LMR, Mane, Payan Bertrand SA, Robertet and Sotraflor.

Absolute essence, more commonly known as “absolute” is a natural or intermediate extract used in perfumes, aromas and cosmetics.
Products that will obtain the geographical indication “Absolue du Pays de Grasse” must simultaneously meet the following criteria:
• Be derived from plants grown or harvested in the departments of Alpes-Maritimes, Var or Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
• To be processed within that same perimeter
