Styralyl alcohol : conclusions de l'évaluation CoRAP

On 16 October 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced the publication of the conclusions of the evaluation of Styralyl Alcohol carried out by Italy as part of the Community Rolling Action Plan (CoRAP). Several CLH classifications are recommended.

1-phenylethanol (CAS No.98-85-1, EC No.202-707-1, INCI: Styralyl Alcohol) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the function : Perfuming.
The substance is not currently regulated by European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, nor is it listed in Annex VI of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008.

The substance was included in CoRAP for several reasons for concern: suspected carcinogenic, suspected mutagenic, wide dispersive use, consumer use, exposure of workers.
During the evaluation the following additional concerns were identified: acute toxicity oral route, eye irritation, and repeated dose toxicity oral route.

Italy completed its evaluation of the substance in September 2024, confirming all the reasons for concern, with the exception of mutagenicity.
It proposes to assign the following CLH classifications to the substance:
• Acute Tox. 4
• Eye Irrit. 2
• STOT RE 2 (liver)
• Carc. 2
