On 19 April 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that Sweden had submitted its proposal for a harmonised classification and labelling of p-Cymene, a fragrance ingredient, as category 1B Reprotoxic. A classification, which, if adopted, will also impact mixtures containing it.
In line with its previous intention, Sweden therefore proposes to classify the substance as a category 1B reproductive toxicant. If the process is completed and the classification becomes effective, p-Cymene would thus be listed as a CMR whose use, unless exempted, is prohibited in cosmetic products in Europe.
p-Cymeme (CAS 99-87-6, EC 202-796-7), listed as a “Fragrance” in the CosIng, is currently not regulated by the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, nor is it one of the ingredients concerned by the future “Allergens” Regulation.
Current classification
p-Cymene has been incorporated into Annex VI (entry 601-094-00-1) of the CLP Regulation 1272/2008 by its 17th ATP, the provisions of which apply from 17 December 2022.
