Asia marching towards plastic microbeads ban in cosmetics

Following the decisions taken by the United States, France and United Kingdom, and and more recently by Korea, Taiwan now schedules the ban of plastic microbeads in cosmetic products. A draft text has just been transmitted to World Trade Organization (WTO).

With a view to protecting marine environment from plastic microbeads influence, the Environmental Protection Administration intends to propose restrictions on the manufacture, import and sale of personal care and cosmetics products containing plastic microbeads, in reference to the detail and control schedule of the US Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. Two transition periods will be provided for businesses to comply with the new requirements. For manufacturers and importers, the requirements will be effective on 1 July 2018; for vendors, the requirements will be effective on 1 January 2020.
