AMPPs (aromatic and medicinal perfume plants) are high value-added ingredients in cosmetic products, and the basis of many essential oils. During the Aromadays organised by Cosmed and the HE Consortium at the end of 2022, Julien Zanatta, PPAM Project Manager at France Agrimer, presented an overview of their production in France… and highlighted some levers to help the development of this sector.
As a reminder, France Agrimer is a public organisation under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, whose mission is to support the various agricultural sectors in metropolitan France. Julien Zanatta works there on economic studies and their dissemination to the players in the sector and the public authorities.
One of the most recent studies concerned the origin of AMPPs (aromatic and medicinal perfume plants) used in the composition of organic cosmetics manufactured in France.
This study, carried out by the research company Klorobiz, took place from October 2021 to May 2022. It was initiated following the strong growth of the organic cosmetics market, especially until 2020, when growth was driven by an increasing demand from consumers for products that are more environmentally responsible, better for their health, but also local.
Its objective was to determine the supply of organic AMPPs for cosmetics, particularly in terms of origin, in order to determine whether France was able to meet the demand.
