The acacia tree, also known as Acacia senegal is the characteristic species in the drier parts of Sudan and the Northern Sahara.
Acacia trees produce unique biopolymers (arabinogalactans) that are harvested by traditional methods since ancient times. Here, small incisions are introduced into the trunks or branches of acacia trees. As a result, an amber-colored resin exudes, is scraped off, collected in leather bags and dried in the sun. This dried, tree exudation is called gum Arabic or acacia gum. Due to its functional homologies to collagen, Lipoid Kosmetik calls it acacia collagen.
