VKM call for data on caffeine in cosmetics

Appel à données du VKM sur la caféine dans les cosmétiques

The VKM (Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment) launched a call for data on caffeine concentrations in cosmetics and personal care products. The aim is to assess the overall exposure of the population to this substance, including all sources (food, dietary supplements, cosmetics…).

In our daily lives, the VKM explains, we are exposed to caffeine from e.g. food, dietary supplements, cosmetics and personal care products. Therefore, estimations of the Norwegian population’s total caffeine exposure should include multiple sources of caffeine.
For this reason, the Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids, Materials in Contact with Food, and Cosmetics at the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) has initiated a risk assessment of caffeine, which will include exposure estimates from multiple sources. Data on caffeine concentrations in cosmetics and personal care products are required to make estimations about exposure.

The overall objective of this call for data is to offer the opportunity to submit documented information (published or unpublished) about concentrations of caffeine found in cosmetics and personal care products.
VKM invites businesses and other interested public and private parties (including authorities, organisations, universities, research and other institutions, and companies) to submit information about concentrations of caffeine found in cosmetics and personal care products. In the risk assessment of caffeine from multiple sources, this information will be used for estimating caffeine exposure.

The deadline for the submission of data is 31 August 2020.
