Cock-a-doodle-doo! Without lapsing into chauvinism, the French appreciate products made in their own country! According to a recent study conducted by the OpinionWay polling institute for the CCI, 85% of consumers are in favor of Made in France. Quality and support for the local economy are among the factors motivating such a choice.
To carry out this survey, 1013 French people (aged 18 and over) were interviewed between October 4 and 6, 2023.
Purchasing criteria
When it comes to shopping (for food, cosmetics, etc.), consumers pay attention first and foremost to price. This is the most important factor for them (80%). Next, they look at quality (73%), lifespan (41%) and finally the country of manufacture (23%). “This last point is a more important criterion among French people with higher incomes: 30% among people whose household earns €3,500 or more per month, compared with 20% among the less well-off,” explains OpinionWay.
Local purchasing is dominated by food (70%). But 33% of the panel explain that they make the tricolore choice when it comes to purchasing cosmetics.
“Economic patriotism appears to be the primary motivation for buying Made in France products. 63% of buyers of these products say they do so to support local producers, and 56% to support the French economy. The second source of motivation has more to do with the purchasing criteria of the French and the intrinsic value of products: 47% say they buy Made in France products because they are of better quality,” says the polling institute.
