Towards a difficult year end for independent cosmetics retailers?

Ankorstore, a company that puts brands and distributors in touch with each other, has carried out a survey to find out the sales prospects of small perfumeries for the festive season. Many retailers fear mixed results due to consumers’ deteriorating purchasing power.

This study was conducted in-house by Ankorstore. 300 French independent retailers were surveyed between September 12 and 25, 2023.

Inflation is on everyone’s mind. Soaring prices and tight budgets are worrying retailers. 69% think that the fall in purchasing power is the biggest difficulty they will have to face at the end of the year, “far ahead of rising supplier and logistics costs (8%) or competition from the retail and e-commerce giants,” adds Ankorstore. 85% of those surveyed believe that consumers will not increase their holiday budgets. 31% believe they will spend less than last year, and 54% are betting on a similar shopping basket.

Fear of Black Friday

For some years now, Black Friday has been a must-attend event in November. The start of the Christmas shopping season is generally marked by Black Friday and its exceptional promotions offered by supermarkets and e-commerce,“ explains Ankorstore. “Practices that independent beauty and wellness retailers can’t compete with. This year, 46% of them will refuse to take part. Among them, 60% consider the operation contrary to their values, and 40% admit that the economic situation prevents them from offering similar discounts.”
