Pro-retinol or pure retinol, the two active ingredients coexist and are increasingly used in eye contour care products. In both cases, the trend is to control the metabolism of retinol in the skin without triggering a reaction, thanks to synergies of active ingredients (notably antioxidants) that improve tolerance.
Despite its restrictive stability and the risk of irritation (especially in the fragile area around the eyes), synthetic retinol (one of the active forms of vitamin A) remains a benchmark anti-wrinkle molecule and one of the most effective anti-ageing ingredients (as well as smoothing wrinkles, it stimulates the synthesis of dermal fibres, collagen and elastin, and inhibits their degradation enzymes).
Retinol biologically accelerates cell renewal and helps to increase the living epidermis, restoring the quality of the epidermis. It reduces deep wrinkles and evens out the skin. While the dosage of pure retinol is limited to 0.3% in Europe, this is not the case for retinol precursors or esters (retinol palmitate, beta-carotene), which are not subject to regulation.
