Although karanja seed oil (or pongamia oil, INCI: Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil) is not on the European Union’s list of approved sunscreens, it is being promoted this summer by many brands as a complement to chemical or mineral sunscreens (thus reducing the percentage).

Garancia, Acorelle, Typology and Aroma-Zone all use it in their new suncare products. Garancia refers to it as “a plant bioprotector with broad-spectrum photoprotective properties (absorption of UVA, UVB and blue light) and rich flavonoid antioxidants for external and internal protection.” Pongamia oil is used in two new suncare products: L’Eau Solaire Protectrice Métamorphosante SPF50+ and L’Eau Solaire Rouge Métamorphosante Sun Protect SPF30 (150 ml, €22.90). According to Garancia founder and pharmacist Saveria Coste, “pongamia oil is a plant-based filter that offers the equivalent of SPF 15.” These suncare products, which contain no controversial ingredients (no alcohol, no microplastics, no synthetic polymers, no endocrine disruptors… they are rated 100/100 on Yuka), can be applied to the most sensitive skin, babies, children, adults and even pregnant or breast-feeding women. All with “Océan respect” formulas and optimal sensoriality thanks to a monoï fragrance and a non-greasy technofilm with an invisible touch that provides a “bare skin” sensation.
