On 27 January 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a consultation on France’s proposal for harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) of Hexamethylindanopyran, a fragrance ingredient. This consultation is open until 28 March 2025.
1,3,4,6,7,8-Hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-γ-2-benzopyran (CAS No.1222-05-5; EC No.214-946-9; INCI: Hexamethylindanopyran), also known as Galaxolide, is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the functions: Fragrance, Perfuming.
It has been added in Annex III/336 of the European Regulation 1223/2009 by Regulation 2023/1545 on “new” allergens, to make it subject to compulsory labelling as soon as its concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
It is also listed in Annex VI/603-212-00-7 of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications:
• Aquatic Acute 1, H400 - Very toxic to aquatic life.
• Aquatic Chronic 1, H410 - Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
