Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate HCl: A New Ingredient in Our Cosmetics

Following an industry request, and after the opinion of the CSPC (European Scientific Committee on Consumer Products), Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate HCl (CASE No.: 60372-77-2), has just been added in appendices III and VI of the cosmetics Directive, which means that its use is now authorized inter alia as a conservative, but under certain conditions.

The industry request went back a few years, and related to the use of Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate HCl for purposes of preservation and other ends as well, but its follow up had some twists.

In a first opinion of 15 March 15 2004, the CSPC was reserved about its use, for the reason that it was likely to cause irritations of mucous membranes. The committee of experts then had asked for added information.

New opinion on 15 April 2008.

This time, the experts estimated that this ingredient does not present a danger to consumers, when it is used as a preservative in cosmetic products, up to a maximum concentration of 0.4%. However they refused its employment in products for the lips, oral products and sprays, because of possible irritation of  mucous membranes and the respiratory tract.

In the same way, they came to the conclusion of an absence of danger to consumers, when used for purposes other than than to inhibit the development of micro-organisms (this purpose standing out from presentation of the product), up to a maximum concentration of 0.8% in soaps, dandruff shampoos and deodorants other than those in spray form.
