On 15 November 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published France’s intention of an harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) for Hexamethylindanopyran, a fragrance ingredient, as a reprotoxic and endocrine disruptor substance. A threat to its use in cosmetics if the process goes ahead.
1,3,4,6,7,8-Hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta-γ-2-benzopyran (CAS No.1222-05-5; EC No.214-946-9; INCI: Hexamethylindanopyran) is an ingredient listed in the Cosing, with the functions: Fragrance, Perfuming.
It has been added in Annex III/336 of the European Regulation 1223/2009 by Regulation 2023/1545 on “new” allergens, to make it subject to compulsory labelling as soon as its concentration exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
It is listed in Annex VI/603-212-00-7 of European CLP Regulation 1272/2008, with the following classifications:
• Aquatic Acute 1, H400 - Very toxic to aquatic life
• Aquatic Chronic 1, H410 - Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects
France, which is assessing the substance as part of CoRAP, is proposing to add two classifications:
• Reproductive toxicity
• Endocrine disruptor for human health
If the process is completed and these classifications become effective, Hexamethylindanopyran could be listed as a CMR and a ED, and its use could be banned in cosmetic products in Europe.
