Following the mandate given by the European Commission to the SCCS in March 2020, the Scientific Committee has just published its final Opinion on the safety of the cosmetic colorant Acid Yellow 3 (CI 47005). It has been adopted by written procedure on 23 July 2021.
Background
The substance with the INCI name “Acid Yellow 3” (CI 47005) is listed under entry 82 of Annex IV to the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No.1223/2009 and therefore it is allowed for use in non-oxidative hair colouring products up to a maximum on-head concentration of 0.5%.
In 2004, the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic and Non-food products (SCCNFP) stated that the identity of the substance was unclear and recommended that a re-evaluation of the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for this food colour should be performed.
The Scientific Committee published in preliminary Opinion on May 2021.
