Silica (nano): Call for information

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has received a request for a scientific Opinion on the safety of silica (nano) used in cosmetic products. Interested parties are invited to submit any relevant information that could assist the scientific committee on the safety assessment. All information should be submitted at the latest by 31 May 2014.

Four substances are involved:
• Silica (nano), CAS: 112945-52-5,
• Hydrated silica (nano), CAS: 112926-00-8,
• Silica silylate (nano), CAS: 68909-20-6,
• Silica dimethyl silylate (nano), CAS: 68611-44-9.

Scope of the call for information

Interested parties are invited to submit any relevant information that could assist the scientific committee on the safety assessment, such as: identification of the type of cosmetic product using these ingredients (silica in nano structured form) and their concentration; protocols of applications; differences in solubility including for surface coated materials; information on adverse health effects; results from toxicological tests with such products or ingredients contained within including inhalation toxicity, genotoxicity/carcinogenicity/toxicokinetic studies, photocatalytic activity and phototoxic effect, or any other scientific data/publications considered relevant to assess the safety of such products.

Submission of information

All information should be submitted in electronic form to specifying “Silica (nano) - Call for Information” in the subject line of the e-mail.

All information is considered public unless otherwise stated by the provider.

Deadline for submission of information: at the latest by 31 May 2014.
