Following the submission of a safety dossier by industry, the SCCS has assessed the safety of Silver Zinc Zeolite, a preservative transferred to Annex II (prohibited substances) to European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 by the first “CMR” Regulation. The Scientific Committee has just adopted its final Opinion.
Background
Silver Zinc Zeolite (SZZ) (CAS No.130328-20-0, EC No.603-404-0) with INCI name “Ammonium Silver Zinc Aluminium Silicate” used for its antimicrobial effects.
Following its classification as “Toxic for reproduction Category 2” in the CLP Regulation, the substance has been banned for use in cosmetics by Regulation 2019/831 (the first of the “CMRs” Regulations).
In August 2020, the Commission services received a dossier submission by industry to support the safety assessment of SZZ as a preservative in cosmetic products, in particular in spray deodorant and powder foundation.
The SCCS published its preliminary Opinion in March 2023.
