A world tour of the natural cosmetics markets

Natural and organic cosmetics are doing well. This is the statement made at the Natural Cosmetics Conference held in Berlin at the end of September 2019, where Elfriede Dambacher (Naturkosmetik konzepte), Melanie Schriever (Mixed Greens) and Moritz Aebersold (Contura Consulting) proposed a world tour of the natural cosmetics markets, to highlight the key figures and the main trends that ensure their good health.

Globally, Europe is still the leading market for cosmetics in all sectors. But it is also a market marked by a certain stagnation for several years, and whose turnover growth is achieved almost exclusively through luxury products and natural cosmetics.
The global market for natural cosmetics alone reached around €44 billion in 2018, thanks in particular to strong growth in the United States and Asia. Demand continues to increase, and although natural products dominate, certified organic cosmetics have also gained market share worldwide.

European markets

In Europe, natural and organic products accounted for 12% of the total cosmetics market in 2018. Driven by low-cost private labels, the growth trend should continue in 2019 (around +6%).

In Germany
• Total cosmetics market in 2018: €13.8 billion
• Market share of natural and organic cosmetics in 2018: 9.1%
• 2019 trend for natural and organic cosmetics: +9%

More and more German consumers are turning to natural cosmetics, which is now growing faster than certified cosmetics.
This success benefits all distribution channels, including the Internet, which has a 6% market share for natural cosmetics.
