It has just won the Ingredients Trophy - Technical Category, awarded by Cosmébio during its Ingredients and Packaging meetings held on October 26 and 27, 2022. Quoc-Tuan Do, chemist-informatics manager of Greenpharma, presented, during the same event, this innovative solution for the conservation of a cosmetic formula: Hinoline C.
We know that the problem of conservation is crucial in cosmetics. Greenpharma has set itself the goal of solving it with a natural solution. Its project started five or six years ago by searching, in its proprietary database, all the woods that had the particularity of keeping for a very long time. The best candidate was found to be the Aomori Hiba, also called “the tree of life”, which has an extraordinary longevity and is particularly resilient to environmental aggressions. It is for these properties that it is used for the construction of temples in Japan.
The molecule that gives it its properties is hinokitiol, which has antimicrobial activity, especially against fungi and yeasts. However, it is less effective against bacteria.
It also respects several interesting criteria for cosmetics: it is a natural molecule, listed in the IECIC (Inventory of Existing Ingredients in China, which includes the only ones that are accepted) and is widely available.
A good marriage
To remedy its antibacterial weakness, Greenpharma chose to optimize it by combining it with another natural molecule, meeting criteria compatible with cosmetic developments (price, sourcing, listed in China, etc.).
Further research in the database, and after tests with hinokitiol, the choice …
