Cosmetics market and trends in Russia

Everyone knows the cosmetics industry is one of the most flourishing in the world. However, trends and consumers’ desires vary from one country to another. At the Cosmed International Congress organized on June 9, 2017, Business France provided an overview of the cosmetics landscape in different regions of the world. Our first report deals with Russia.

The Russian cosmetics market

Key figures
Russians consume a lot of skincare products, so much that the country’s cosmetics market is in the Top 10 of European markets, ranked fifth, right behind France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy. ‘The volume of the perfume and cosmetics industry is estimated at 15 billion euros in 2016, which corresponds to a 6% rise, compared to 2015,’ Yulia Goncharuk explained.
In Russia, almost 70% of products are imported. Yulia Goncharuk reiterated the fact that France is a leader in terms of imports. ‘France reflects an image of luxury and refinement to Russian consumers. French cosmetics are well-known for being quality products,’ she added.

Consumer profile
Women are very concerned about their appearance and use a lot of skincare products, makeup, and perfume. But men also like taking care of themselves: they represent 12% of cosmetics consumers.
Russia has not escaped the green attitude trend, since the demand in natural and organic beauty products has been increasing.
