Flexit: what it changes for Brexit

Flexit : ce que ça change pour le Brexit

At the end of October, a further postponement of Brexit, the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, was validated. A “flexible” postponement which must be effective by 31 January 2020 at the latest, but which can in theory take place at the end of each month by then. At the Cosmetic Valley Perfumes & Cosmetics Congress, held in Chartres on November 6 and 7, 2019, Emma Meredith of the British CTPA (Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association) and Emma Trogen of Cosmetics Europe presented the new deal of this Flexit.

“Surprise! We still don’t know how (or really when) the Brexit will be done!”
That’s how Emma Meredith introduced this presentation… And it was not just a joke, since several scenarios, and several dates, are still possible today.

The current political situation

The deadline provided for in Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union has again been extended until 31 January 2020. This is a “flextension”, which means that this date of 31 January must be understood as a deadline for leaving the United Kingdom from the European Union, which could, however, occur earlier.
A withdrawal agreement, with a transitional period, has been validated by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the European Union, but it could be called into question after the general election on 12 December. Because it is the next government to be appointed after these elections that will decide the British position on Brexit.

It should be noted that if Boris Johnson wins these elections, he has already indicated his willingness to leave the European Union as soon as possible (and if possible before 31 January) and not to extend the transition period as possible, preferring to negotiate a free trade agreement before the end …
