French mood in 2024

At the start of the new year, how is French morale? Are they full of hope, or are they still reeling from the various crises facing contemporary society? The Harris Interactive polling institute surveyed consumers to gauge their mood.

The study was carried out online on December 27 and 28, 2023. 2020 people responded to an online questionnaire.

Before looking ahead to 2024, respondents were asked to take stock of 2023. For 51%, the year was good overall. “For the first time since the health crisis, more French people gave a positive assessment of their year than a negative one. All consumer categories share the feeling that their personal situation has improved compared to previous years,” comments Harris Interactive.

The French are more optimistic than pessimistic about 2024 (54%).

Concerns for the future

“Purchasing power remains at the top of the French people’s list of concerns for the coming year. Then come security issues (insecurity, the fight against terrorism), followed by social issues (health, pensions, education).”

In fact, the economic question is the most important for 77% of respondents. However, only 27% of French people are optimistic about a rapid improvement in their purchasing power. More than one French person in two believes that inflation will remain high for at least another year. While a large majority of French people say they are concerned about inflation, this feeling has declined since the spring, especially among the more affluent categories. …
