French people and sun protection

Like every year, as the summer season approaches, temperatures rise, arms become bare and consumers bask in the sun. An act not so harmless if we do not respect certain precautions. This is confirmed by a study commissioned by the FEBEA from OpinionWay on French people’s behavior regarding sun exposure and the use of protective skin care products.

Although the sun is essential for good health, it is also very dangerous. UV rays damage the skin. They are responsible for skin lesions, accelerate the aging of the epidermis and are the cause of cancers.

In France, there are more than 90,000 cases of malignant melanoma, including 11,000 new cases each year. It is the disease that is increasing the most in France.
In men, they have been multiplied by five between 1990/2018 and by three in women.

Results of the survey

The FEBEA was interested in the habits of the French regarding the use of sun protection.

The study was conducted in April 2021, on a sample of 1015 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over.

When exposed to the sun for several hours:
• 79% of French people apply sun protection
• 20% apply it only once during the day
• 19% do not use it at all “In total, nearly 40% of French people do not apply enough or any sun protection. The most resistant are men (27% never use it) and the over 65s (30%),” comments the FEBEA.
