For several years now, the Dons Solidaires association has been working with IFOP to conduct the “Hygiene and precariousness” barometer. The results of the 2024 edition highlight the difficulty a growing number of people have in obtaining basic skincare products. This situation affects the working classes and young people in particular.
The survey was conducted among a sample of 2,000 French people. Interviews were conducted over the Internet between November 17 and 22, 2023.
The current economic context is marked by a major fear of price rises. 95% of respondents say they are worried about inflation.
57% of French people say they often can’t make ends meet. 46% are afraid of falling into poverty.
The importance of hygiene
According to the study, a large proportion of the panel feels uncomfortable in public because of their physical appearance. This may involve teeth (26%), hair (26%), body odor (16%) or personal hygiene (13%).
This feeling of unease is more prevalent among young people (45%) and the poorer classes of the population (40%).
“Nearly one in two French people now say that the current economic climate is forcing them to limit their consumption of personal care products, a proportion that is on the rise,” says IFOP.
